3-Day Mount Meru Climb – Momella Route Itinerary
Meru Trekking
The 7-day Mount Meru climb and Tanzania safari package combines high-altitude trekking with classic northern circuit wildlife experiences. This itinerary begins with a guided ascent of Mount Meru (4,566m) via the Momella Route in Arusha National Park, followed by a multi-park safari through some of Tanzania’s most iconic landscapes.
Mount Meru offers a scenic and wildlife-rich trekking experience, ascending through montane forest, giant heather, and alpine moorland before reaching Socialist Peak at sunrise. With fewer crowds than Mount Kilimanjaro, Meru provides a rewarding summit experience and panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro from the crater rim.
Explore one of Africa’s most concentrated wildlife ecosystems, home to lions, elephants, rhinos, and large herds of plains game within a dramatic volcanic caldera.
Known for its large elephant populations and ancient baobab trees, Tarangire offers excellent dry-season wildlife viewing and diverse landscapes.
A compact yet diverse park famous for tree-climbing lions, flamingos, groundwater forests, and scenic Rift Valley escarpment views.
This itinerary is ideal for travelers seeking a shorter high-altitude climb combined with a classic northern Tanzania safari. It works particularly well for those who want a Kilimanjaro alternative, a scenic acclimatization climb, or a balanced mix of mountain adventure and wildlife exploration within one week.
Incredible Africa Adventures operates professionally guided Mount Meru climbs and wildlife safaris with a focus on safety, structured itineraries, and responsible tourism practices. Our mountain teams are experienced, and our safari guides are trained wildlife professionals committed to delivering meaningful and well-organized experiences across Tanzania.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by our Incredible Africa Adventures team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. In the evening, you will meet your experienced mountain guide for a comprehensive Mount Meru climb briefing and equipment check. The guide will review safety procedures, altitude awareness, and route details to ensure you are fully prepared. Any missing gear can be rented locally. Overnight at your hotel.
Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours | Habitat: Montane Forest & Open Grassland
After breakfast, drive to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park, where your Mount Meru climb via the Momella Route begins. Following registration with TANAPA, your trek starts. The first section resembles a walking safari. Accompanied by an armed park ranger, you may encounter giraffes, zebras, antelopes, buffalo, and occasionally elephants. The trail passes the Ngarenanyuki River and a scenic waterfall before ascending through lush forest. Arrive at Miriakamba Hut (2,500m) in the afternoon. Enjoy a freshly prepared hot meal and relax in the peaceful mountain environment. Overnight at the hut.
Hiking Time: 3–5 Hours | Habitat: Heather & Moorland
After breakfast, ascend along a scenic ridge toward Saddle Hut. Vegetation gradually shifts to open moorland, offering impressive views of Mount Meru Crater and the Ash Cone. Upon arrival at Saddle Hut (3,570m), you may take an optional acclimatization hike to Little Mount Meru (3,820m). This enhances altitude adaptation and improves overall summit success. Dinner is served early to allow proper rest before the midnight summit attempt. Overnight at Saddle Hut.
Hiking Time: 10–12 Hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert & Rocky Ridge
Shortly after midnight, you begin your summit attempt. The trail climbs steeply to Rhino Point (3,800m) and Cobra Point (4,350m). The final stretch follows a dramatic narrow ridge between the crater and outer cliffs. At sunrise, you reach Socialist Peak (4,566m), where spectacular views of the Ash Cone and Mount Kilimanjaro await. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Saddle Hut for a short rest before continuing to Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight.
Hiking Time: 2–3 Hours
After breakfast, descend through the scenic forests of Arusha National Park. Wildlife sightings remain possible along the trail. At Momella Gate, receive your summit certificate before transferring back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Enjoy a well-earned rest before your safari adventure begins.
After breakfast, depart for Lake Manyara National Park, beautifully located at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. During your game drive, you may spot elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, flamingos, and, with luck, the famous tree-climbing lions. A picnic lunch is served inside the park. In the late afternoon, transfer to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full-day safari. This UNESCO World Heritage Site hosts one of Africa’s highest concentrations of wildlife. Expect to see lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras, hippos, and endangered black rhinos. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the crater floor before returning to your lodge in the afternoon.
After breakfast, drive to Tarangire National Park, renowned for its massive elephant herds and iconic baobab trees. Game drives may reveal lions, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, and diverse birdlife. After lunch and afternoon wildlife viewing, return to Moshi or Arusha in the late afternoon.
Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy leisure time before your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Optional extensions such as Mount Kilimanjaro climbs, Zanzibar beach holidays, or additional safari days can be arranged upon request.
