The standard fee for the Ordinary Visa is USD 50 for most nationalities.
Travelers who plan multiple trips into Tanzania or require more flexibility can apply for a Multiple Entry Visa. This visa is particularly necessary for certain nationalities such as United States citizens due to bilateral agreements, and it allows the holder to enter and exit Tanzania multiple times within a longer validity period, usually one year with each individual stay not exceeding the permitted duration. The fee for a Multiple Entry Visa is USD 100 in most cases.
A Business Visa is issued to foreign nationals entering Tanzania to engage in professional or commercial activities such as short-term business meetings, audits, feasibility studies, training, or establishing business contacts. This visa also permits stays of up to 90 days per visit and the cost is typically USD 250. Applicants must ensure they apply for the correct category and provide supporting documentation that justifies their business purpose.
If you are passing through Tanzania to reach another final destination outside the United Republic, a Transit Visa may be issued for stays not exceeding seven days. This type of visa is meant strictly for travelers who remain in the country briefly between flights or land connections and is generally issued at the point of entry. The standard fee for a Transit Visa is USD 30.
Tanzania also provides visas for educational, research, and specific long-term purposes. Student Visas may be issued for academic studies or research work, and their costs vary depending on duration, often starting from around USD 50 for short stays up to several hundred dollars for longer programs such as PhD research. There are also Gratis Visas granted to diplomatic or official passport holders free of charge.
It’s essential to remember that holding a visa does not automatically guarantee entry into Tanzania — final admission is determined by Immigration Officers at the point of entry, who may refuse entry if travelers fail to meet immigration requirements. Travelers should ensure that all documents are accurate and complete before departure. Landing via an official entry point, presenting your visa or grant confirmation, and having travel details ready helps facilitate smooth entry.
In addition to a Tanzania visa, visitors planning to enter Zanzibar, the semi-autonomous archipelago that is part of Tanzania, must have mandatory Zanzibar inbound travel insurance for the duration of their stay on the islands. Since October 1, 2024, all non-resident visitors (including children) must purchase this government-issued insurance before arrival or upon entry, with the policy valid for up to 92 consecutive days. The mandatory insurance costs approximately USD 44 per adult, with children ages 3–17 paying around USD 22 and infants under 3 free of charge. This policy provides coverage for emergency medical assistance, repatriation, baggage loss, legal expenses, and other essential travel risks, and is required even if you already hold a separate travel insurance policy. The policy must be obtained through the official Zanzibar Insurance portal and presented upon entry at airports or seaports in Zanzibar.
While mainland Tanzania currently does not enforce a specific mandatory travel insurance requirement identical to Zanzibar’s, comprehensive travel insurance is highly recommended for all visitors. This is especially important for travelers participating in high-risk or adventure activities such as climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, wildlife safaris, or remote hiking, where coverage for medical evacuation, emergency care, trip cancellation, and travel delays provides essential peace of mind.
