3-Day Mount Meru Climb – Momella Route Itinerary

3-Day Mount Meru Climb via The Momella Route

The 3-day Mount Meru climb via the Momella Route is a rewarding high-altitude trek in Arusha National Park, leading to the summit of Socialist Peak (4,566 meters). As Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, Mount Meru offers dramatic volcanic scenery, abundant wildlife, and panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro from its narrow crater rim.

This itinerary follows the established Momella Route, ascending through montane forest, giant heather, and alpine moorland before reaching the summit ridge at sunrise. The 3-day schedule is ideal for well-prepared hikers seeking a shorter but challenging climb in northern Tanzania.

Is the 3-Day Mount Meru Climb Right for You?

The 3-day Mount Meru itinerary is recommended for fit hikers who can manage steady altitude gain within a shorter timeframe. Itinerary

Arrival Day: Welcome to Tanzania

Your incredible journey begins upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Our friendly team will warmly welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Later, you’ll meet your experienced mountain guide for a full briefing on your upcoming Mount Meru climb. This includes an equipment check to ensure you're fully prepared for the adventure ahead. If you’re missing any gear, you’ll have the opportunity to rent it locally, so you're completely ready for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Day 1: Moshi/Arusha – Momella Gate – Miriakamba Hut

Hiking Duration: 5–7 hours

Elevation: ~1,500m to 2,500m

After an early breakfast at your hotel, we’ll drive you to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park, the starting point of your Mount Meru trek. While porters organize your gear, you and your guide will register with TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks Authority).

Today’s hike is truly special—akin to a walking safari. Along the scenic trail, you'll have the chance to spot giraffes, zebras, antelope, buffalo, and even elephants. Due to the presence of wildlife, an armed park ranger will accompany your group for safety.

You'll pass the Ngarenanyuki River and a stunning waterfall at the base of Mount Meru before reaching Miriakamba Hut (2,500m), where you’ll enjoy a warm dinner and well-deserved rest. Don’t miss the gorgeous sunset views from camp!

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut – Saddle Hut

Hiking Duration: 3–5 hours

Elevation: 2,500m to 3,570m

Following a hearty breakfast, you’ll ascend a steeper trail that leads through lush forests and along the ridge toward Saddle Hut. The route offers incredible views of Mount Meru’s crater, Ash Cone, and the surrounding landscape. Wildlife sightings are still possible along this scenic trail.

Upon arrival at Saddle Hut (3,570m), you’ll rest and refuel before taking an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m). This short hike helps your body adjust to the altitude and rewards you with panoramic views.

Dinner will be served early so you can get a good night’s sleep in preparation for your midnight summit push. Lights out by 7:00 PM!

Day 3: Saddle Hut – Mount Meru Summit – Momella Gate – Moshi/Arusha

Hiking Duration: 12–14 hours

Elevation: 3,570m to 4,565m (summit) and descent to ~1,500m

Your summit day begins before dawn. You’ll wake at 12:30 AM for tea and biscuits before beginning your ascent at around 1:30 AM under the stars.

The trail leads steeply up to Rhino Point (3,800m), then to Cobra Point (4,350m), and finally along a rocky ridge between the crater walls to the summit of Mount Meru (4,565m). You’ll arrive just in time to witness a breathtaking sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro and the Ash Cone below.

After taking in the stunning views and celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend back to Saddle Hut for a brief rest and lunch, then continue all the way down to Momella Gate. From there, we’ll transfer you back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for a well-deserved rest.

Departure Day: Farewell or Extend Your Adventure

Spend your final day in Moshi or Arusha at your leisure, recovering from the trek. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time to explore local markets, enjoy a cultural tour, or relax with a coffee tasting experience before your airport transfer. If you'd like to extend your adventure with a safari or day trip, we’d be happy to help you plan the perfect add-on.
