3-Day Mount Meru Climb – Momella Route Itinerary
Meru Trekking
The 4-day Mount Meru climb via the Momella Route is the most recommended itinerary for summiting Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, reaching Socialist Peak at 4,566 meters. Located within Arusha National Park, Mount Meru offers a scenic and wildlife-rich trekking experience with fewer crowds than Kilimanjaro.
The Momella Route ascends through montane forest, giant heather, and alpine moorland before reaching the narrow crater rim for a dramatic sunrise summit. The 4-day schedule allows improved acclimatization compared to the 3-day option, increasing comfort and summit success rates.
The additional day allows a more gradual ascent, supporting altitude adaptation and increasing summit success compared to shorter itineraries.
Reach the summit ridge at sunrise with panoramic views of the Ash Cone and Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
Giraffes, buffalo, antelope, and colobus monkeys are frequently seen on the lower slopes during the first day of trekking.
Traverse multiple ecosystems within a compact route, from dense montane forest to high-altitude moorland.
The 4-day Mount Meru itinerary is ideal for trekkers seeking better acclimatization and a less rushed summit experience. It is particularly recommended for climbers preparing for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro or those wanting a scenic standalone high-altitude trek in northern Tanzania.
Incredible Africa Adventures provides professionally guided Mount Meru treks led by experienced local mountain guides and supported by armed park rangers as required by Arusha National Park regulations. Your unforgettable journey begins as you land at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Our professional team will greet you warmly and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Later in the day, you'll meet your experienced mountain guide for a detailed briefing on your Mount Meru trek, including an equipment check to ensure you’re fully prepared. If you’re missing any essential gear, it can be rented locally—so you’re all set for the adventure ahead.
Hiking Duration: 5–7 hours
Elevation: ~1,500m to 2,500m
After breakfast at your hotel, we’ll transfer you to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park, the official starting point of the Mount Meru trek. While our porters organize and pack your gear, you and your guide will register with TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks Authority).
The trek begins through open grasslands and forested trails, offering a unique opportunity to experience a walking safari. Along the way, you may encounter giraffes, zebras, antelopes, buffaloes, and possibly elephants—all within view of the trail. Due to the presence of wildlife, an armed ranger provided by the park will accompany your group for safety.
You’ll pass by the Ngarenanyuki River and a beautiful waterfall before arriving at Miriakamba Hut (2,500m). A warm dinner and washing water await, followed by a chance to relax and enjoy a stunning sunset over the park.
Hiking Duration: 3–5 hours
Elevation: 2,500m to 3,570m
After breakfast, you’ll begin a scenic climb up the steep ridge leading to Saddle Hut. The trail offers expansive views of the Mount Meru crater, the Ash Cone, and lush forest landscapes. Keep your eyes open for more wildlife along the way.
Upon arrival at Saddle Hut (3,570m), you’ll have the option to take a short acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m) with your guide, providing both breathtaking views and better altitude adaptation.
An early dinner will be served at camp to allow for enough rest before your midnight summit attempt. We recommend getting to sleep by 7:00 PM.
Hiking Duration: 10–12 hours
Elevation Gain: 3,570m to 4,565m (summit), descent to 2,500m
At 12:30 AM, your guide will wake you for a light snack of tea and biscuits before beginning your summit attempt at 1:30 AM. The trail ascends steeply to Rhino Point (3,800m) and Cobra Point (4,350m). The final stretch involves scrambling along a narrow rocky ridge between the crater rim and inner cliffs.
You’ll reach the summit of Mount Meru (4,565m) just in time to witness an unforgettable sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro and the Meru Crater—a truly magical moment.
After celebrating at the peak and taking in the panoramic views, you'll descend back to Saddle Hut for a short break and refreshments, then continue to Miriakamba Hut for a well-earned dinner and overnight rest.
Hiking Duration: 2–3 hours
Elevation: 2,500m to ~1,500m
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before beginning the final descent through beautiful forest and meadow landscapes. Keep your camera ready—you may still spot wildlife on your way down.
